Deep South Be Scary

Once again OJ was a little nice in his description of Montgomery, Alabama.

The place is an absolute dump. OJ has the pictures to prove it. There are sections of this city that look like they still have outhouses in their backyards. To put it in perspective, every city we have visited so far had strip malls, fast food restaurants and some form of eatery on pretty much every corner. Montgomery had NONE. Even the signs on the stores look like they were put up 50 years ago and are about to fall down. In the words of my buddy Tommy from Virginia: "That's what happens when you lose the Civil War and go through a 150 year economic depression. Ya damn Yankees!"

Some woman yelled at OJ as he was trying to take pictures of the houses on the side of the road, probably because she saw our NY license plate and wanted us Yankees to go back to our mansions in Brooklyn. We managed to escape unscathed, however.

On the bright side, the Civil Rights Memorial is amazing. It's the exact opposite of everything else in the city...clean and lavish. When looking at all the violent acts that took place in the South during the Civil Rights era, almost all of them took place in Alabama and Mississippi. Guess where our next destination is?....

The meal we ate was good too. Some good Southern comfort food in Montgomery, and our waitress had a Southern accent as thick as molasses. Very appropriate.

On to Jackson, Mississippi for more Deep South scariness.
